Frugal Friday

Kent took Caris for the day so Baby Ziza and I got our Thrift on! We bought the following..  1. The Tale of Three Trees   Probably won't get through it without crying 2. Green Eggs and Ham  A childhood CLASSIC. Quoted to me every time I refused to try a new food.  3. Oh, David!  A cousin to the books "No, David!" that I discovered while teaching. Caris learned about the books at the Y childcare and she walked around the house dramatically saying "NO DAVID!"  4. Curious George Opposites WE LOVE GEORGE! And opposites are perfect for us right now. 5. American Eagle skinny jeans I'm hoping these fit me- I broke the cardinal rule of thrifting- I didn't try them on. And I'm eating a piece of birthday cheesecake as I blog so... I also paid $2 more than regular jeans (final price $7.99) I've learned that good jeans are hard to find so it's worth the extra money. 6. Lime Leopard outfit for C 7. Pumpkin pants ...

Frugal Friday {Shoe Edition}

Image
I've been on the look out for a pair of quick and easy shoes for my #1 girl. Just something to throw on to get the mail (one of her favorite activities).  Crocs $1.99 The color is less than desirable, but they're in perfect condition and just the kind of thing I wanted- quick and easy!   "Show me your shoes!"  {Pants are optional around here}  When our family first moved down South 14(!) years ago, we had extra play money for the first time ever (Thanks to my Suga' Daddy, Chuckles) Ma and I made many trips to the mall just for fun. I mean, we bought things full price from The Gap. Those were the days.... We usually checked out the shoe collection at Dillards and I acquired two pairs of shoes from the designer, Gianni Bini. A few years later, while thrifting, I found a pair of Gianni Bini flats. And just like that, I had  A SHOE GUY (I've always pictured him as some old Italian guy, but maybe it's just a brand name?) A few weeks ago I a...

Frugal Friday: Church Rummage Sale

Image
Two weeks ago we went to a church rummage sale. A sweet lady from my bible study told me about it. She's from Canada and calls thrifting "Garage Saleing" Sailing?  And I could listen to her talk all.day.long. We arrived at 9AM, an hour after it started and the place was HUGE and the place was PACKED with people. This included some grumpy, pushy people that wanted all the cheap stuff for themselves.   Next year I'll be prepared with elbow pads. When it was all said and done, we spent two hours there. My dear little family came along because they love me so. When I thought I was finished (the first time) , I searched high and low for them only to find them sitting in the "Sofa section" watching a (For Sale) TV that was playing an episode of Barney. When Caris saw me, her face lit up, she held out her arms and said, "MommYYYYY"  Then Kent spent the next 5 minutes scooping the-puddle-that-was-me off of the ground with a $2 snow shovel.  Ever...

What: Baby Gap boots, size 8  Cost: $1.99 Thoughts: These are for next Fall, but she wanted to put them on. And breathe through a broken kitchen strainer.  What: A big sealed bag of cookie cutters. Ya never know what you're gonna end up with... Where:  Habitat for Humanity Store  Cost: Either $1 or $2, I forget Thoughts: Not pictured are the two clown cookie cutters that were already back in a bag to donate. I didn't see myself making clown cookies enough to hold onto them. What: Outfits for next Spring Where: Walmart Cost: $2 each Thoughts: Knowing that I paid $2 for an outfit helps me to relax when we leave the park and she's covered in dirt or when she eats ketchup with her fingers at lunch. If all of her clothes came at a regular price, I'd probably make her sit on a plastic covered sofa all day.  Choosing her favorite...

Friday's {Frugal} Find

What: Umbrella  Where: THE STREET Cost: Free N eeded?: According to Kent, he's been in desperate need of one for quite some time. I* was driving the family around one afternoon.  *I'm not sure why I was driving because I n-e-v-er drive us  Kent began to yell, "An umbrella! Turn around! Turn around!" Me: "Omygoshomygosh no way. There's probably a car coming. It's probably all bent up" Kent: "Turn the car around!" Then I thought, duh, he would totally do it for me. So I turned around, drove up next to the umbrella and Kent opened his door and scooped it up. This all took place in front of a fancy, gated community. NO SHAME.  Ok. A little shame. In the end I was beaming with pride at my Thrifting Apprentice. And he was happy with his find because, "I've been stuck in the rain like, 3 times without an umbrella!" Also filed under:  Proof that I'm turning into my mother...

We-Need-A-Name-For-This-Wednesday

First, dear readers, we have some business to take care of. I'd like to do semi-regular posts on "Thrifting" (something catchy like like Thankful Thursdays) All I have so far is... More of Caris' Inheritance Down the Drain Mondays or Stuff in my house Saturdays [Please submit any ideas] I have inner conflict (deep, counseling word) when it comes to Thrifting. I legitimately don't want a bunch of stuff in my house so the obvious answer would be to avoid shopping altogether (moment of silence while part of me DIES). But the thrill of the hunt keeps me going back again and again. I feel like we've talked about this before... sorry I looked into joining the local Y as an alternative to shopping, . I pictured Tiny Su and I swimming daily and pumping some iron until I found out that it was ninety-nine dollars  a month. That doesn't exactly fit into the monthly budget so my weekly solo outings usually consist of grocery shopping, walk...
