Frugal Friday

I thought I'd catch you up on a little frugality today! We made National Donut Day a family affair with Kent driving in separately and Gigi meeting us there too.  Every time Kent watches the hot and ready donuts, he longs to try an unglazed discarded one that sits to the side of the conveyer belt. He's never asked, but surely Krispy Kreme can make this happen.   The sole's of Kent's Chacos melted last summer when he left them on the dock. He recently got around to mailing them in and the company put new soles on them free of charge. We only had to pay $11 for shipping. I WAS AND AM SO PROUD. I think there's a sermon illustration here too... a new sole at the expensive of someone else?? YES'UH!AMEN!  I stumbled upon this book for sale at the library (50 cents) It's a lady I follow on Instagram that likes to thrift (hence the rad collection of coffee cups), walks her kids to school and has a jail chaplain husband. I haven't read it yet, but I...

1. National Donut Day OHHAPPYDAY! We partook in this day of celebration, but sadly my phone is chunk full of pictures and can hold no more, so no documentation. Liza: Chocolate iced with sprinkles Caris: Birthday Cake Me: Chocolate iced with kreme filling. (Free) 2. New Purse After donuts we took our carb-filled selves over to a local thrift store to make a donation and  walk around the sore (yep, totally contradictory) We wandered around with self-control until the end when I spotted a simple black tote purse. I've accepted myself as a minimalist when it comes to purses. This excites me because it will narrow down my choices, but it also grieves me because it proves that I'm turning into my father, who would wear a white shirt and tan khaki pants everyday if my mom would let him. I've been on the hunt for the perfect black purse for like, ever. Found it! Worth the wait. ($3) 3. Purple + Polkie Dots This morning as I crossed the dangerous Walmart Traverse (You kn...

Donut Worry, Be Happy!

I feel as though it is my civic duty to tell you that this Friday, June 2, is National Donut Day. A few places are offering deals with an additional purchase, but good ol'  Krispy Kreme is giving away one free donut of your choice to anyone one who stops in on Friday. Go getcha' one!

I'm not shopping these days- especially at thrift stores- because...hoarding. Also finances and being a responsible adult (l a m e) but today a local large catholic church had their annual winter yard sale and I've been looking forward to it. It's a huge sale with so, so many hoarders  shoppers. Last year my Ma came with me since she was in town- it wasn't the same without her today! Here's what I found for a total of $20 (woot!) If the thought of buying other people's stuff weirds you out, you might want to skip this post.  Melissa and Doug mail box with mail and stamps For now, I'm saving this for a Valentine's Day surprise  $3 Ariel pajamas and sneakers for Liza When she saw the sneakers she said, "Too big". What a goober. PJS $? Sneakers $1   Headphones for Caris' birthday (She's been asking to use Kent's. Too hook up to what? I don't know), Ariel barbie for bath/pool time, tons of matching hair bows (h...

National Talk Like A Pirate Day

Image
I can't believe but my waistline can  that this is our fourth year celebrating National Talk Like a Pirate Day with Krispy Kreme!  We had enthusiastic pirates this year. We realized that Patch had worn all of our red bandanas over the summer and they were still super smelly. Whoops!   It tasted so good she couldn't keep her eyes open  See the past years: 2015   2014 2013

Cow Appreciation Day

Image
Moooo! Liza should have earned more food for wearing fleece pants in the middle of July.   Caris was really excited about dressing up (yay!) I see many more years of cow costumes in our future.  After all the hard costume work, we ended up paying for some of our meal. It's a long story, but I was UDDERLY surprised and frugally frustrated. Moooooving on...  Liza's face says it all! The whole trip was chaotic and one for the books. Unrelated: Pops and Liza have become fast friends.

National Talk Like a Pirate Day

It's time for another segment of We'll Do Anything for Free Food ! This was our third year celebrating National Talk Like a Pirate Day  with some delicious, free Krispy Kreme donuts. We've added a pirate to the family this year so you do the math...4 dozen free donuts!  Last year   Caris was a party pooper and protested big time. I hissed at Kent, through gritted teeth, " Just leave her alone " while he continued  unsuccessfully  trying to wrap a bandanna around her head. This year was so much more fun! Both of our pirates were excited to dress up with the promise of a sweet treat.   You can see C's first trip here . Arrrrg! Nobody better come between this pirate and her donut. We gave 3 dozen away to other families and felt like Santa (or Oprah) doing it.

Kent took Caris for the day so Baby Ziza and I got our Thrift on! We bought the following..  1. The Tale of Three Trees   Probably won't get through it without crying 2. Green Eggs and Ham  A childhood CLASSIC. Quoted to me every time I refused to try a new food.  3. Oh, David!  A cousin to the books "No, David!" that I discovered while teaching. Caris learned about the books at the Y childcare and she walked around the house dramatically saying "NO DAVID!"  4. Curious George Opposites WE LOVE GEORGE! And opposites are perfect for us right now. 5. American Eagle skinny jeans I'm hoping these fit me- I broke the cardinal rule of thrifting- I didn't try them on. And I'm eating a piece of birthday cheesecake as I blog so... I also paid $2 more than regular jeans (final price $7.99) I've learned that good jeans are hard to find so it's worth the extra money. 6. Lime Leopard outfit for C 7. Pumpkin pants ...

Frugal Friday {Shoe Edition}

Image
I've been on the look out for a pair of quick and easy shoes for my #1 girl. Just something to throw on to get the mail (one of her favorite activities).  Crocs $1.99 The color is less than desirable, but they're in perfect condition and just the kind of thing I wanted- quick and easy!   "Show me your shoes!"  {Pants are optional around here}  When our family first moved down South 14(!) years ago, we had extra play money for the first time ever (Thanks to my Suga' Daddy, Chuckles) Ma and I made many trips to the mall just for fun. I mean, we bought things full price from The Gap. Those were the days.... We usually checked out the shoe collection at Dillards and I acquired two pairs of shoes from the designer, Gianni Bini. A few years later, while thrifting, I found a pair of Gianni Bini flats. And just like that, I had  A SHOE GUY (I've always pictured him as some old Italian guy, but maybe it's just a brand name?) A few weeks ago I a...
